There is really no point, because the ATIS is a pre recorded message and is repeated again and again on the same frequency until a change in conditions occurs or every so often.

If you want to find the METAR and TAF, when i pre flight i use aviationweather.gov, it will give you the time the METAR was issued in Zulu and will give weather condition prevailing at that time. However, it will not give runway in use or Information letter.

Hope this helps,

James

Go to your local FBO and pick up a copy of Cellular Pilot (free).  Most of the larger airports have published phone numbers for their ATIS recordings.

AirNav should also have a god number of these as well, when you view a given airport. But I didn't think they'd have those in print. Gotta head out to KSAC this weekend..

JFK ATIS phone: 718-995-8188

MIA doesn't appear to have a phone number for their ATIS.

Cellular pilot is a SUPER rare publication. If you are not a pilot or have no need to have this book, please don't take it.

I've been after the current issue for awhile. Everytime I end up somewhere... they're out.

Gonna try my luck in Savannah on tuesday.

A long, long time ago we had an ATIS feed for JFK but that died.

I don't know of any other feed where you can get it online so your best bet is to call it or if you're close enough, use your scanner.

It's really nothing exciting, just something like this ...

"Kennedy airport information uniform one zero five zero zulu wind one zero zero and five, visibility one zero, sky clear below 12,000 temperature 10 dewpoint 8, altimeter 3004 arrivals expect vectors VOR DME Runway one three left runway one three right, departures expect runways four left, four right.  Numerous cranes operating in vicinity of Kennedy airport, for noise abatement please use the assigned runways.  Notify you have information Uniform"

That's off the top of my head so it might not be word for word how its one.

Whats the ATIS phone number for KBNA and KCLE?

If you mean the automated weather phone number,

The Fish

KCLE:  216-267-9955
KBNA:  615-360-6133

How to Fish

Look up your favorite airport here:

http://www.airnav.com/airports/

Scroll to the Airport Communications section and locate the "WX ASOS" entry.  If the airport has an automated weather station and phone service, the phone number will be listed here.

Typically true ATIS broadcasts are not delivered by phone number, at least in the US.

Not entirely sure about that. KLAX, KLAS, KSMF, KSFO, KSNA, and KSAN have theirs available by phone; in fact, I called SMF's ATIS number at the same time I was at the airport and heard the exact same thing I had heard when tuned to 126.75 on my scanner. Unless I am misreading this, you can hear the broadcasts by phone but up to a certain period of time (typically no more than a minute and a half), then the ATIS end hangs up.

Yep, it does seem as if the most of the class B airports offer their ATIS via phone.  Just looked here at the East Coast and Midwest class B airports and most of them do, too.  Being used to the class C and D towered airport, I hadn't run across any of those that broadcast their ATIS over the phone.

SMF is Class C, as well as RNO, SNA, ONT, and BUR, which does the same. SAC is Class D and theirs is available by phone, but theirs transitions to their AWOS when the field is closed. So it's available at various class airports, but I haven't seen a pattern to which do and which don't..

How close to the airport must you be to tune into ATIS?

Depends, as the transmissions are basically like a waffle cone; the further up you go, the further away the broadcast can be picked up. Since most scanners are ground based, you'll still need line of sight with the transmitter (though some altitude helps; if the scanner is higher than the elevation of the transmission, you'll hear it clearer). But if at ground level, you'll generally get the ATIS from 1 - 3 miles out from the field.

I live in Gallatin,TN, about 28 miles away from KBNA and can't pick up anything with the mobile antenna from the airport. Do you think my big discone antenna would fair any better in picking up anything from KBNA?

I don't recall suggesting that there was a pattern.

As far as ground-based ATIS reception, I live about 9nm (approx 11 statute miles) from the SYR airport and receive the ATIS here on the ground five by five.  This is with a small ridge between my home and the airport (not direct line of sight).    I use the ATIS all the time to fine-tune my feed's volume.

Not being a radio wave specialist, it seems logical to me that the ATIS would have the same reception footprint or greater than the approach frequencies for the airport, given that the ATIS actually can be received in the air at a greater distance than approach.  Hence, I would think that if you can receive the approach frequencies (not center) from your scanner on the ground, you should be able to receive that airport's ATIS at a much greater distance than 1 to 3 miles.  Is there something to this I am missing?

I've done a lot of testing when driving towards most airports to see how far out you have to be before you get the ATIS. It always seem that 8 miles is the magic number - especially in flat Florida  :-P

I'm probably 10 miles from Auckland and i can get the ATIS almost perfectly clearly.

Actually, i'm nearly 40 kilometres away from Whenuapai and i can hear that ATIS very clearly.

Well, I hooked up my huge discone antenna and picked up KBNA's ATIS 28 miles out from the airport, its rough copy, but I can still make out what the computerized voice is saying. Its exactly like JFK's ATIS in that they use the perfect paul voice.
