Title: ATC History Site
Post by: Panop on October 09, 2007, 09:30:34 AM
I just discovered a fascinating site devoted to the history of ATC in Australia with truly amazing links, photos and even a short clip of how it used to be done in the pioneering days.

The site is run by The Airways Museum & Civil Aviation Historical Society who have actually created an ATC Museum in Melbourne (which you can take a tour of online if you can't get there).

Aussie ATC (originally Aeradio) had some unique challenges to deal with and there are enough things to look at on the site to keep most of you entertained for hours.

The site is http://www.airwaysmuseum.com/ and a few of the many items worth a look are:
Word War II in Northern Australia at http://www.airwaysmuseum.com/DCA%20in%20WWII%20pt%202.htm (http://www.airwaysmuseum.com/DCA%20in%20WWII%20pt%202.htm)
The Museum itself at http://www.airwaysmuseum.com/Museum%20vt%20layout.htm (http://www.airwaysmuseum.com/Museum%20vt%20layout.htm)
A brief movie clip of a 1950s Outback position report at http://www.airwaysmuseum.com/Position%20report%20clip%20download.htm (http://www.airwaysmuseum.com/Position%20report%20clip%20download.htm)
And a picture of probably the most primitive control tower you have ever seen at http://www.airwaysmuseum.com/NG%20Control%20Tower%2040s.htm (http://www.airwaysmuseum.com/NG%20Control%20Tower%2040s.htm)

It's not all history - there are items and links that bring you right up to the present day but it will undoubtedly give you plenty to appreciate about how modern ATC came to be.

I challenge you to find the site boring!  Are there any other similar sites for other countries?  If not perhaps that is a challenge someone would like to take up!
