ATC decoding Software
« on: August 24, 2006, 11:37:16 PM »
Found a cool peace of ATC software (I am not trying to spam), I started to run it with limited results. I did not get any virus warnings so I think it is on the up and up. It describes itself as being a FREEWARE (MS Windows) - Decodes POCSAG & FLEX pagers, ACARS packets from airplanes, MOBITEX data terminals and ERMES using the line input on a soundcard or a serial port data slicer. Note: The soundcard is more reliable for decoding. Also, when decoding ACARS be sure to use the AM discriminator output for reliable decoding. When decoding the other protocols use the FM discriminator output. It is a little hard to get setup but it should work by programing in the freq. on a scanner and use the soundcard as the imput for the data. I found the software this sight http://mirror.bachelorsgrove.com/pro2052/ and it's called PDW110f.zip. If you want try it and let me know if you have any results or like this software.

Since this is an aviation forum.. I am sticking my experience on decoding ACARS..  :-)

I am using ACARSD (Freeware) and AirNav's ACARS (commerical software) decoder all the time and I found both very good.  Scanner is a Radioshack Pro 79, with a RS telescopic antenna

I am not trying to be dumb but when I downloaded and started ACARSD and it said "it is not allowed to monitor all freqs." and when its says "first contract with airplane" that does not mean that the aircraft is trying to make contract with ME. right? sorry if I sound dumb!!

No, the program does not send any tones back, scanner is only one way. Just the the messeging system works, makes contact and sends info.

Congradulations!  Your set up is all fine  :-)   The phrase "First Contact with the airplane", in this context, only means that ACARSD does not have this plane in the (your)  database and it is the 1st time it sees its reg/tail number.  It will then add this new info into the database.
