Air traffic controller careers
« on: August 23, 2004, 06:11:55 PM »
I have recently taken a serious interest in air traffic control, having taken flying lessons and having learned how to do the radio talk.  Are there any career opportunities in ATC for individuals over the age of 31?  I am age 35.

It's a little too late.  :-(

"Because studies show that the unique skills necessary for success as a controller diminish with age, a maximum age of 30 has been established for entry into an FAA tower or center controller position."

it's the same in Austria and you must have an university-entrance diploma.
Below you can read something about ATC in Europe:

I couldn't find anything stating a maximum age for entry into Canada's ATC System, if you're deeply interested.

The situation here in Australia is still a little more relaxed. There were definitely at least a couple of succesful ATC applicants in this years' intake that were 35. And 2005 mid year intake applicants are now being sought by Airservices Australia. Am very tempted to go for it myself.

I recently visited the CYKF Tower in Kitchener, Ontario (CAN) to talk to a controller about a career in ATC.

He was still in training under Nav Canada and just turned 41. (He was so cool! - I owe those guys so much. Thanks again!  :D )
