KTPA Tower frequency issues
« on: August 02, 2024, 00:13:07 UTC »
I provide the feed for KTPA Tower 119.5.  We have been having internet issues for at least the last few days that have caused the feed to go down at random times. Usually for not all that long.  We are switching internet providers as soon as they can come out and do the install. That should fix the issue by improving the connection from the street. (fingers crossed) We will have a lot more bandwidth on the upload side as well.

Sorry for any frustration!!  :-(

I'm new here. I use this site to switch between freqs when using my flight sim. I fly into KTPA all the time. I was wondering how you guys go about this. You just keep a scanner on the freqs and mic it and livestream it 24-7? And can you stream multiple freqs at once or just one at a time? Is that costly for you? And thanks for the service.

For me it's a scanner connected to the audio in on a pc. LiveATC provides some software that uploads loads it their servers and they stream it.  There are ways to upload more than one frequency. I believe LiveATC can split the left and right channel if you had a scanner connected to just to the left channel and another to the right channel.  It can also be done with a Raspberry Pi that can do multiple frequencies with dongles in place of scanners. I don't know much about how the latter works.  Either method requires only one antenna.

It's not costly to provide the feed. Just some minor electricity. There is some expense in getting a scanner and an antenna. And mounting the antenna.  But it wasn't all that expensive.

We have made the switch in internet providers.  Significant upgrade in speed.  From 375 down 10 up to 950 down 875 up.  The upload to LiveATC doesn't use much bandwidth at all, but at only 10 up, it bothered me. The biggest improvement was the connection into the residence. The prior connection was using a pretty old coax cable. We now have fiber all the way into the house.

So hopefully no more random downtimes on the feed! (fingers crossed). There will be some minor downtime in the future (when its slow) to relocate/rearrange cables and some of the hardware. And then we will see if we are able to add some more frequencies. :)

I was wondering what happened. At some point I want to provide additional frequencies using PI as final approach is located north just near US 54 and Sunlake but there are some constraints limiting me from doing this.
