Air Force One
« on: April 23, 2007, 06:25:54 PM »
Hi all,

I was wondering: What is the callsign of air force one?

I can't find it on wikipedia...

Thanks.

Um......Air Force One?

Air Force One is actually the callsign used whenever the president is onboard the plane. When the vice president is on the plane, it is Air Force Two.

Same thing for other branches also. Example Navy One.

Also known as A1.

But if you're thinking about tracking it on a flight tracker, forget it.

The tail numbers of the two modified 747 aircraft sometimes used to transport the president are 28000 and 29000 and the air force identifies the airplanes as VC-25A's, but like cactus said, air force on is the call sign of air force one.

Hence the callsigns of the VC-25As when the president or vice president are not on board are SAM28000 and SAM29000 respectively.

Ok, sorry for not making myself clear -- I wasn't paying attention... I feel like and idiot for what I typed above.

Is the ICAO code:  AFO ?

The callsign as it would appear on the strip is A1.  A is the USAF designator, R1 would be Army One, VM1 would be Marine One, VV1 is Navy One.

I am not exactly sure how Executive One (when the POTUS is on a civilian aircraft) would appear, although I assume it would look something like EXE1 or something like that.

Ah, that new to me, but then again I haven't had to deal with that battle...yet.  Well that and I didn't really dig that deeply into the 7110.65 last night either.   Thanks for the corretion.

The Venus callsign is used for many other aircraft out of ADW.  You will see GLF4 ,LJ60, B737, B757 or King Airs with that call sign.

Old post but I would like to mention that one of the two 747's was at MDT today doing touch-and-go's (like it does often), and it was "Venus One Heavy".

It does pattern work here. Today it was right closed traffic for 31, touch and go's. I believe it's always the AF1 colors, so 28000 or 29000 (the two AF1 birds). They are up here fairly often, and have done this for years. When I had a tower visit at MDT in eighth grade with my Aviation Club, they mentioned AF1 aircraft coming up here alot for pattern work. I'm now 25 so that's over ten years ago. They were here today around 11am-12pm timeframe, then departed IFR back to ADW. I am pretty sure that is their usual time period to come up here as my dad works near MDT and has seen it several times around lunchtime.

She's back at MDT right now (10:43am).  Venus One again. Right closed for 31.

Tim

Addendum: Navy C-9 also in the pattern for touch and go, 11:01am.

Addendum 2: Two A-10s, an PA ANG EC-130 Hercules, an Army King Air also in the pattern or airspace, 11:31am. Venus 3-1 now departing to ADW.

I only saw him once on a pass by the house, before starting his pattern work. Would've made a great pic or vid if I had known he was coming and ready. As it was, I didn't, but heard a huge jet noise and looked outside to see a beautiful Seven-Four flying by. Tuned into the MDT East Approach and MDT tower feeds and listened while they did their thing. Unfortunately, even though I saw the C-9 at least five times while they were in the pattern, the 747 ends up being visible only once. If I ever get any pix of the 7-4, will let ya know!

keep in mind that there that AF1 is different from AF1. (confused you already, eh? read on).

Don't get confused between the ICAO code for Air Force One (AF1) and the IATA code for Air France 1 (AF1). A controller's strip will (should?) never have AF1 listed for Air France 1. That should always go in as AFR1, as AFR is the ICAO code for Air France. As the common passenger will generally only see the IATA code, AF1 will always be Air France 1, whereas the strip will be AFR1.

That is one of the reasons the strip  for Air Force One is AF1. Also, the POTUS doesn't want to be known for Steak Sauce. Free advertising, you know. ;)

BL.

PS. Also, to my knowledge, there has only been one time in modern history when Executive One has ever been used, and that was on a DC10 flight after some major incident, IIRC. May have been from the aftermath of AAL191..?
