Advice on a new scanner
« on: March 10, 2019, 04:15:03 PM »
I need to replace my Radio Shack PRO-164.  That model has a broad range of freqs but I am interested only in Aviation (Military and Civil), so I guess that woud be 108-137 and 216-400 roughly.  Any recommendations ?  It looks like Radio Shack is out of the scanner business and that is all I have ever owned (3 in 25 years).

I absolutely love the BCT15X. I often see them on Amazon or Ebay around $110-$120. Does great on both VHF/UHF aviation, plus some analog trunking systems.

Description says "difficult" to program.  How hard can it be ?  I just need to put in say 50 freq's in 3 or 4 seperate banks.

By the way, the Pro-164 is handheld.  I don't need handheld but that's all I have ever had.

Honestly it wasnt that hard, for me anyway. You can choose 'conventional' and choose which bank, then input all the frequencies. I think the hardest part was figuring out how to setup a trunking system. Some Youtube videos definitely helped.

ok, thanks ... I'm not interested in that (trunking) so not a concern.
