Only problem is I'm not sure what they're listening to!  It seems that the scanner is disconnected from the feed.

I think it's still feeding. I heard spurious transisioning aircraft being vectored out of the airspace for diversions. Airport is probably totally closed.

http://www.liveatc.net/.archive/cyyz/CYYZ-Toronto-Aug-02-05-1530.mp3

Listen to the few minutes at the end of this archive, you can hear the final transmissions from AirFrance 358 going to tower and on approach. Hmm somehow copied wrong link...

Five minutes into Toronto's 16:00 archive (and just after ATC announces the airport was closed due to the crash), a KLM airliner declares a "Low Fuel Emergency" and then turns direct to the Syracuse, NY, airport.

Toronto ATC had their hands full today.

20 years ago today, on August 2, 1985, a Delta Air Lines Lockheed L1011-385-1 crashed while attempting to land at Dallas/Ft. Worth Airport, Texas in a thunderstorm. 134 of the 163 passengers and crew aboard were killed.

Yikes. What a day August 2nd. Similar conditions, hopefully this accident has better outcome.

Can anyone find anything of the aircraft and controllers talking before the crash?

The last few minutes of the 15:30 archive has it.  It is an uneventful vector to the localizer and clearance for the ILS.  The only additional info you hear is a couple of speed reduction calls from ATC to the Air France aircraft, but this is normal in a very busy arrival corridor.

Seventeen minutes into today's Syracuse 16:00 archive, Syracuse ATC begins to vector other arrivals in preparation for the arriving KLM Airliner that had declared a fuel emergency at Toronto.

Twenty six minutes into the same archive, the KLM Heavy airliner makes its first contact with ATC.

I checked the archives about an hour ago:

15:30 Archive

23:49 AFR358 down to 5000

25:19 AFR358 down to 4000

26:05 AFR358 cleared ILS 24L

26:45 AFR358 reduce to 160 knts

27:18 AFR358 Minimum Speed

28:01 AFR358 Over to the Tower

29:08 Controller gives report of lighting to KLM691's 12 o'clock, 1 o'clock and 5-6 miles. That would be in the vicinity of AFR358 on final for 24L. As someone mentioned a passenger said they lost power before touchdown. I would say the lighting definately had to do with that and possibly the fire.

16:00 Archive

3:00 Announces that an aircraft off the end of 24L, cancels ACA1105's Approach clearance, climbs ACA1105 to 6000. ACA1156 has approach clearance cancelled and decides to divert to the alternative (London, Ontario)

4:10 KLM691 goes around, climbs to 4000 and starts diversion to SYR. KLM691 wants comfirmation that airport is closed, gets the confirmation.

5:00 KLM691 declares low fuel emergency to SYR, considers Hamilton. Has just enough fuel to SYR, 30 mins worth of fuel. Cleared direct Syracuse.

Arrivals into YYZ are at pilots discretion, but there is no Fire/Ems available.

I think a reporter from CP24 (David Onley?) had listened to the archive at 15:30 and 16:00 from CYYZ..   during the news segment covering this

BTW.. way to go Luc!  Seems that everyone was jumping on your feed during this unusual event, although no one wants this to happen.

and also, can anyone tell me what is "Crash/Fire/Rescue, or CFR" Category 9?   What are the categories?

JL

If you are out there publishing links, publish these instead:

I am also working on a BitTorrent link for download to help conserve bandwidth and spread the load around.

Thanks,

This is certainly a great experience for you as a webmaster.

Download speeds this morning were around 1.7kb/sec, which told me the site must be getting hammered.

I have the downloads throttled on purpose.

I've run sites far larger than this.  :-)  But those were professional sites and I had a much larger budget and a real staff.  ;-)

I've been doing this for a long time...actually, put one of the first commercial web sites on the air back in the day.
