A question about routing
« on: April 03, 2008, 05:25:11 PM »
I was looking at one of the flight tracker sites for a flight going from PHL to ORD and it shows  the following as the route:

PTW PTW320 SARAA J64 RAV J64 FWA OXI3

My question is where can a person find out what these symbols mean?

Thanks for your your assistance.

I'm sure you'll get much more detailed answers than this but just for quick reference:
three letter identifier= VOR,
J and numbers= jet route above 18,000',
five letter identifier= intersection or fix,
V and numbers= Victor air route used by aircraft operating below 18,000',
three letters and numbers or five letters and numbers= arrival and departure routes ie., POLAR2 arrival to DTW, or the EAU8 arrival to MSP.
This is NOT a conclusive list and there are variables, but you get the jist of it.

Also, three letters with three numbers is a fix radial distance

Actually three letters with three numbers is a fix radial (SYR275 = Syracuse 275 Radial). A fix radial distance has 6 numbers (i.e. SYR275040 = Syracuse 275 radial 40 mile fix).

That routing is

Pottstown, Pottstown 320 radial to SARAA intersection, Jet route 64, Ravine, Jet route 64, Fort Wayne, Knox Three Arrival.

That doesn't exactly help him out. He wanted to know a way to decipher all routes he looks at.

PHL, I wouldn't say that. He was given the information to figure it out and I just interpreted it for him to give him an example.

Well my point was knowing what Pottstown and SARAA for that example wouldn't exactly help him know this:

TFD2.CIE.J2.FST.J138.SAT.GLAND3

Yep, okay, I see. I should've said Pottstown VOR, etc. All I was trying to do was take what RV1 said and put it in perspective (i.e. the routinghe provided).
