The general airspace in and around DEN is pretty busy.  About 6 or 7 years ago (memory is a bit fuzzy as to exact timing) there was a mid-air pretty close to downtown Denver, as well.  While I'm shocked that this incident occurred, I can't honestly say I'm surprised.
