Inside a stored B747-200 at Manston (UK)
« on: May 15, 2011, 05:00:58 PM »
Was playing about on the Internet one night and happened to come across a couple of forum post of "explorers" going aboard an ex-Kuwait airways B747-200 stored at Manston Airport.
I know there's a certain 747-related member of the community here that will like these photos!

Just thought I'd share them here for general interest!

and another one:

Boeing 747-269B, MSN 22740, was delivered to Kuwait Airways new in January 1982. Ferried to Manston in November 2008 for scrapping. Presently still intact and waiting for the claw.
I've often wondered what the interior of an aircraft that has been stored for a few years looks like - Now I know! This one is remarkably complete and looks ready to fly again at a moments notice.

Awesome Pics! Like mrhahn said, she looks like she could fly at any given moment! Very neat pics, thanks for sharing!  8-)

She is actually a B747-269B(M). The reg # is N309TD (cn 22740/553), in case anyone was wondering...

From this page here, linked in the original post,

http://www.planespotters.net/Production_List/Boeing/747/22740,9K-ADD-Kuwait-Airways.php

...she was owned by Kuwait Airways as 9K-ADD, with several leases to Garuda Indonesia, then sold to Trans Atlantic Aviation and re-registered as N309TD, but never flew for them...

#1 is how she looked towards the end of her career with Kuwait Airways.
#2 is how she looked in 1989.
#3 is how she looks now, no titles and a US reg #.

As far as I can tell, the Reg. is actually N309TD. All other info remains the same!

I don't know much about this "Trans Atlantic Aviation"...failed up-start?? It appears this is the only aircraft in their fleet...

I can't seem to find a whole heap of information on them either. An old Pprune post says they also had a number of Ex-United B762  a few years back, so I'm thinking they are perhaps more along the lines of aircraft leasing/dismantling?
As you say, their fleet now lists only the one B742.

She is also listed on ch-aviation.ch as to be scrapped.

"553    22740       B747-269B(M)    N309TD    Stored at Manston (MSE) / to be scrapped    Kuwait Airways    9K-ADD    Kuwait Airways"

I'm thinking it was a failed up-start. Probably obtained an operating certificate, but never began operations. The aircraft is absolutely perfect judging from the pics...shame nobody wants her...

While on the subject of failed up=starts, there was an ex-TWA/Tower B747-131 (N93117, cn 20322/113), that was purchased by a carrier called "Family Airlines", but the airline never got off the ground. She was parked at KSBA, moved to KMHV, and eventually scrapped. Below is a pic of N93117 in full "Family Airlines" livery, parked at KSBA.
