(only one scanner at LBB, so did the best I could to keep the tx's for just the incident)

LUBBOCK, Texas (KCBD) - Passengers described a frightening situation aboard a flight that aborted a takeoff in Lubbock on Thursday evening.

The Southwest plane, a Boeing 737 bound for Las Vegas, stopped its takeoff at around 6 p.m.

The airline tells us the crew suspected an engine issue. Lubbock Fire Rescue responded and confirmed a fire in an engine; crews worked to put it out.

The plane returned to the gate nearly an hour later under its own power. That’s when passengers were finally able to get off the plane.  No one was hurt.

We spoke to some passengers who credit the flight crew for getting them through a scary situation.

Passenger Jennifer Barbee said, “They made us feel very safe and did an amazing job because we were literally coming offf the groud to the air when it happened. I just feel very lucky that nothing happened. A lot of people were scared, but we all agreed that they handed it so well. The pilots kept us safe because if we were to have gone up into the air, I dont know what wouldve happened.

The Lubbock airport closed a runway for cleaning and inspection.

11:58ET heard a better sounding tower transmission come on, and a controller said, "I got it, Nate," as if handing over from a backup or mobile station to the main. Other transmitters were struggling to hear the tower for the last 40+ minutes, even though everyone else sounded clear.

An 4.8 magnitude earthquake at around 10:19AM eastern time rumbled across the northeastern United States today.  It was centered in New Jersey and felt from Albany NY down to Washington DC.  KEWR stopped departures and arrivals for a short time and the tower controllers were moved to an alternate site.  Because of this a number of flights had to divert to alternates...

Since this morning's 4.1 Earthquake, KEWR has had a groundstop. Tower was unsure if Ground was up, or offline. AAY1396 around 11:20 local could not raise the tower on approach and had to go around. Tower has sounded terrible and ground cars trying to raise. Sounds like operations may be resuming.

Aviation Audio Clips / Plane Landing Gear Mishap Closes Santa Barbara Airport Runway

A small plane’s landing-gear mishap caused a shutdown of the main runway at the Santa Barbara Airport on Wednesday.

The incident involving a single-engine Beech C24R occurred at about 9:40 a.m.

The plane’s left landing gear didn’t deploy correctly as the aircraft touched down from the west on Runway 7, according to airport spokeswoman Angi Daus.

“There were no injuries or major impacts, but it took about one-and-a-half hours to get the gear equipment retracted so that the aircraft could be towed off the runway,” Daus said.  During that time, the runway was out of service.

“The timing was fortunate because it didn’t impact any commercial flights directly, but it did cause slight delays in a couple departures,” Daus told Noozhawk.

The plane is registered to Above All Aviation, a flight school at the airport, according to the Federal Aviation Administration.

(Like most of the SE the past day, some horrible weather.  Found SWA coming out of MSY, then lose them on Houston Center for the Gulf of Mexico(so never heard the emergency call), then a descriiption of the injuries as they diverted to TPA.  Weather even looks like it knocked out most of the TPA LiveATC feeders last night too)

Two people were injured when a Southwest Airlines flight encountered severe turbulence on Wednesday morning and had to make an emergency landing in Tampa, Florida, according to a spokesperson for Tampa International Airport.

Southwest Flight 4273 was traveling from New Orleans to Orlando when the captain declared an emergency after experiencing turbulence aboard the Boeing 737 jet, the airline said in a statement.  “The Captain declared an emergency, a requirement to deviate from a filed flight plan, and also requested that paramedics be available when the aircraft arrived to assess any potential injury,” the statement said.

A passenger and a flight attendant were transported to a Tampa area medical facility, the airline added.

The Federal Aviation Administration is investigating the incident, a spokesperson told CNN.

According to CNN Weather, storms that brought severe weather from the Ohio Valley to the Deep South on Tuesday were draped over the Gulf of Mexico this morning, causing strong thunderstorms in the area.
CNN’s Taylor Ward contributed to this report.
