Raspberry Pi and multiple RTL tuner dongles

Hi all,

I'm wanting to upgrade my current 4 channel YPPH stream from scanners, USB sound, to RTL tv tuner dongles.
Is it possible yet to run 4 tv tuners for 4 separate frequencies?
I stream Approach, Departures, Ground and Tower with 4 scanners and 4 USB Creative Labs Sound Play USB sound cards on a powered hub, but would like to upgrade it in the future to get rid of the scanners,

Cheers

it is do-able... drop Dave an email or via the contact form and he will take it from there.

It is difficult to run 4 tuners on a single Pi. We have run three with no issues. But first I would suggest swapping out whatever you have for a Pi 3 board - a Pi 2 will work OK, too. You also need a better power supply than you may have now - get at least a 1.5A supply, preferably a 2A supply. I also suggest not using a USB hub as they have been known to cause issues with the DVB tuners.

With the current freqs at Perth you can produce 4 feeds from 2 tuners using RTLSDR-Airband, running each tuner in multichannel mode (which limits bandwidth to 2.5 MHz per dongle):

Tuner 1:
123.600
121.700

Tuner 2:
118.700
120.500

When you are ready to do this contact me through the site contact form for details and I can help you out.

Thanks Dave.
Have sent you an email :)

Hi all,

I have be following this thread and thought I would give the RTL-SDR Airband a try.

I have a Pi3 with 2 dongles. 1st dongle is sending ADS-B to FlightAware and FlightRadar24. 2nd dongle is up and running Airband/Icecast2. I currently only have 1 mountpoint streaming 1 freq.

When comparing my production stream on liveatc to this new icecast stream on the new Pi3 using the RTL-SDR, I notice about a min delay where the new Pi3 is a min behind my liveatc stream. Is this due to some sort of buffering the icecast server on the Pi 3 has to do? Is there a way to reduce the delay to something close to what I am getting with my liveatc stream?

The goal would be to replace my older setup with the new Pi3 and add another freq. But, I would like it to be a little more 'real-time'.
