EHRD feed setup
« on: March 19, 2009, 05:52:11 AM »

I've attached two pictures from the EHRD feed setup. The airfield is about 14km to the north east from the receiver location.

The antenna is home made, dimensions provided by Martin DK7ZB. The audio is fed from a Yaesu FT-857 to the USB SoundBlaster and is connected to a Soekris net5501-70.

The Soekris is running FreeBSD 7.1 on a compact flash card. The image is generated with the NanoBSD script. DarkIce converts the raw audio to mp3 (using lame) and sends the stream to Icecast locally. A co-located server (Dell R200) relay's the stream on demand. And LiveATC relay's from the co-located server. So altough the stream between home and server is on-demand, it is always running because of the LiveATC archiving service..

Nice setup pictures! Is your antenna a 2M beam, or did you cut it to the airband frequency?
I'm working an a 4 element beam here. Nice to see homebrew projects.

I did cut it to the airband. Dimensions i received from Martin are:

All elements 10mm diameter, impedance 50 Ohm, gain 4 dBd on 118 MHz, 6 dBd on 137 MHz. Gain is not very high due to very great bandwidth.

Mast as reflector, Radiator position 400mm, length 1136mm
Director 1 position 560 mm, length 1000mm
Director 2 position 960mm, length 940 mm

The receiver is only tuned to 118.2MHz, so maybe in the future i'll make a narrower bandwidth antenna, with a few extra elements to raise the gain.
