From your many years of listening ,and the fine range of receivers you have..a question..what in your experience is the most sensitive and best vhf air band receiver for long distance ??? or is it case that they are all pretty much the same and the best reception is down to the antenna   M50

Hi i always beleived its not a matter of  best radio its the antenna that you use the reason i say that i have owned Aor-5000/Icom-R9000/Icom-R9500 commercial receivers & others but without the right antenna u dont get anywhere now been using the Icom-AH7000 discone for 15 years its an excellent antenna for vhf airband & other vhf/uhf bands tried other discones Aor-DA3000,Comet-DS3000,Diamond-D130,Diamond-D150
poor performance on the airbands other bands okay just to give u an idea i live 80 km from melbourne internaional airport the area is flat so i dont have any height advantage can hear melbourne atis/ground controllers & pilots talking antennas are around 12 metres high & connected to a 4 way stridsberg multicoupler excellent product run 8 radios with a T piece in the back of 4 radios with no loss at all  also use custom airband antennas from 2 aussie companys that supply antennas worlwide civil defence polar/rfi these do an excellent job on the 118mhz-136mhz only.I use a Wellbrook-ALA1530 active loop to monitor hf aero.I regard the antenna & coax cable as the most important thing in a radio set up as for coax i use belden-9913 coax cable, icom 5d-2v 50 feet supplied with discone also have 3 more runs of 50 feet icom coax.
