Missoula down

Severe lightning storms here the last few days keeps knocking the power out and killing my stream. Would a UPS be of any help to keep the PC up and running?

Another lightning strike while I was writing this message.

A UPS would help... but it wont last long if you plug it to your PC as PC's power consumption is quite high, depending on your PSU.

Another way is to go for a low power consumption set up like a raspberry pi which is available for sale here on LiveATC and you can contact Dave about it. If you are comfortable with Linux and setting it up then you can refer to aviator's guide here http://milaircomms.com/raspberry_pi_scanner_streaming.html. It consumes about 5W so your UPS should be able to last longer. Of course you will need to connect the UPS power to your radio too for it to feed to LiveATC.

On another note, what type of lightning protection do you use? Just wondering.

Chris,

Yes, good suggestion on the RPi K Tower!

Plug your other essentials into the UPS such as the modem and router as well.

Another useful item is this:

http://3gstore.com/product/4186_single_outlet_remote_power_switch.html

It's a remote power switch to either manually or automatically power on/off your router in case you need to do a "Power Cycle".
I've got one and it works great for doing those remote power cycles if needed when it senses a loss of internet connectivity.
