KJFK feed - Status over the summer
« on: June 05, 2006, 05:46:43 PM »
Hey everyone, I am going to make this quick.

Until now the JFK tower feed has been sponsored by joepilot to cover the electrical costs of the feed which in the summer time will rise over $20 a month. As of June 22nd the sponsorship will be completed, it was meant to be a 3 month span to help get me started.

I have just been selected to go on a study program overseas, and will be studying there for the entire next year. Basically, every cent I make is going toward that program, except for food and living costs. I can not afford to pay $20 a month to continue the feed, its just too much for a student to pay each month. So heres what I am getting to...

I know JFK is the most popular feed on the site, and would hate to take that away from the devoted listeners. I will be home until august the 25th, after that my roommate has offered to take over the feed as long as all fees are taken care of... he does not want to take over the bill. If anyone can help keep the feed running, please private message me.

Unless some donations for the feed come in, the JFK feed will end on june the 22nd. If they do come in, I will keep it up for as long as the listeners would like me to. I have no problem paying for the equipment, but the electric will kill my cash flow. As of now, I dont have enough... even with my scholarships.

Thank you all for your time, and I hope together we can keep the feed running!

Lezam,

I'd be willing to pay to get your feed back up for the rest of the summer, but only if I can pick what frequencies are being scanned, and can get you to change them from time to time. How often are you near the scanner and willing to change frequencies ? This way I can test reception and consider the feasibility of having a remote scanner at that location. My intent would be to listen to different New York frequencies/sectors and change it up every few days. I'll pay you $20.00 for one month to cover costs plus an additional "tuning" fee for your trouble. Just let me know if you are interested. DJ

For those interested, I've paid up the expenses to keep the feed running for the next 2 months, for this the owner of the radio has been kind enough to give me control of the radio to choose the frequencies I want to scan. For now my intent is to focus in on different areas/sectors for around a few days at a time.

The radio is located in the vicinity of the JFK airport, but this area is covered well with the other JFK super feeds, so I'll be checking out other airports/airspace around the New York area. For the last week we have been testing different frequencies to get an idea what reception is like. Reception is very good to the west, and poor to the east, so far, apart from the JFK area, we have only been able to hear controllers on La Guardia Final 134.900, and La Guardia departure 120.400. Reception on 134.900 is very good, both aircraft and controllers. When I'm done checking out other areas I'll probably leave it on one of these two most of the time.

For now the radio is set up to scan the New York Center sectors to the northwest, the high sectors 132.175, 121.325 and the low sectors 132.600, 133.150. These sectors are working JFK arrivals inbounds on the LENDY and Kinsgton (IGN) arrivals, as well has departures from the New York terminal area over the COATE, NEION, GAYEL departure fixes. Reception range is pretty good as you can hear traffic all the way to the New York/Cleveland Center boundary around 175 nautical miles to the northwest.

Watch this space and I'll try to keep you updated on what frequencies are currently in the scanner. And thanks again to the owner of the radio for letting me do this and taking the time to tune the radio for me, and of course to Dave and all the people that keep the LiveATC network going as well, thanks. DJ

sound quility very good.  132.175 will get alot of traffic in the early afternoon thru the evning this is were most of the traffic from europe going to iad, cvg, pit, atl, mem, dfw and all other location.  another freq you could try is 128.575 as this handles alote of inbound to the nyc area. if you know of anyone in the centreal part of pa between sunbury and williamsport their is a transmitter that handles 128.575.

Hoepfully the radio will be back up sometime Sunday. On request are the following frequencies .....

135.800 Boston Center
124.525 Boston Center
132.150 New York Center
128.300 New York Center
118.000 New York Approach
129.900 New York ARINC

Last time we checked reception range, it wasn't very good to the east, but we'll put these eastern sectors in for awhile and see how it goes.

- 135.800 Boston Center, low altitude. JFK inbounds from the northeast on the PLYMM/ENE stars. JFK departures via BETTE and HAPIE.

- 124.525 Boston Center, high altitude, east/northeast of New York.

- 132.150 New York Center, high altitude, southeast of New York, sector prior to oceanic handoff to ARINC/HF, via CHAMP/FLANN etc.

- 128.300 New York Center, low altitude, JFK departures via SHIPP and WAVEY.

- 118.000 New York Approach, east of New York, under 135.800, KISP arrival/departures etc.

- 129.900 New York ARINC, southbound, position report over CHAMP/FLANN/SLATN etc., given HF assignment.

The above frequencies have been up for a few days now, except for 135.800 which was just added Sunday morning. We'll leave it with this configuration for a few more days. Aircraft reception towards the east and northeast is poor, but a little better to the south than I previously thought. And you can hear the ARINC operator loud and clear on 129.900. DJ

It was a little too busy, 118.000 and 124.525 have been removed, the radio is now scanning 135.800, 128.300, 132.150 and 129.900. DJ

Next frequency on request is 134.900, La Guardia Approach (Final), the plan is to leave it up until around next Monday, then try some more high altitude sectors. DJ

I assume the feed you are speaking of is the second "JFK Tower" feed in the feed listing?

OK, thanks for the response. I think the audio might be a bit low on the feed as compared to the others, thanks for all the efforts!

The radio is now set up to scan the high altitude sectors on:

127.175 New York Center
125.325 New York Center
124.525 Boston Center

The plan is to leave it there for a couple of days then try La Guardia departure for awhile.
