Miami, FL - A plane headed for a South Florida airport was forced to circle the airport for an hour on Wednesday due to winds from Hurricane Ian.

Officials with Miami and Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International airports decided to keep the airports open on Wednesday as Hurricane Ian made landfall.

At least 180 flights were canceled at Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International, including 89 arrivals and 91 departures.

Officials say the flights that weren't canceled experienced difficulties due to the category 4 storm.

The pilot of a Delta Airlines flight from Boston was forced to fly around Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport for an hour while awaiting confirmation on whether it was safe to land.

Chris Capazzoli, a passenger on Delta flight 821, told Local 10 News "we got to circle and circle and circle."

Another passenger, identified as Janette Raab, tells the news outlet “a bunch of people started getting sick" as the pilot circled the airport.

Greg Chin, of the Miami-Dade Aviation Department, says Wednesdays flight was diverted to Miami International Airport because its runways allows pilots to land into the wind.
