Atlanta's Hartsfield-Jackson airport restores power after crippling outage

Atlanta (CNN)Nearly 11 hours after a power outage paralyzed the world's busiest airport, Atlanta's Hartsfield-Jackson International got its electricity back late Sunday night.

The lights flickered on shortly before midnight, after an exhausting day for travelers, that had left thousands stranded in dark terminals and on planes sitting on the tarmac. A ground stop in Atlanta disrupted air travel across the United States and led to cancellations of more than 1,000 flights in and out of the airport.

I'm sure they will get them back up as soon as able. Undertand the Approach and the others are in different positions? Why Approach came back and the others still down?

This has me thinking that they are not colocated, meaning that the TRACON is not located at the same location as the Tower. For example, R90 TRACON in Omaha covers the OMA/CBF/LNK area, and borders the KSUX TRACON. However, the physical building for the TRACON is at KOFF (Offutt AFB).

NorCal TRACON is the same way. It is roughly 4 miles from me, in Sacramento, next to KMHR. However it serves the entire Bay area, down to Modesto, and Reno. SoCal TRACON is near Miramar MCAS, in San Diego, but covers the entire SoCal basin, all including Palm Springs.

Conversely, KLAS has the tower and TRACON in the same building, but on different floors.

My guess is that the TRACON is in a different location in the Atlanta area, as well as the Center. If they were all in the same place, the entire TRACON and Center facilities would have been dead, causing ZJX, ZME, and ZID to extend their coverage across their boundaries to cover the loss.

Similar happened when a wildfire nearly took out ZLA a few years ago, causing ZOA, ZAB, and ZLC to extend their ranges to cover the area.

If power was out at the airport, the ATC infrastructure was definitely affected.

No, sir. ATC was never affected.

The power went out at one or some of the terminals as far as I know. The Tracon continued operating normally.

You can see how they continued getting airplanes in minutes after the power outage.

This actually goes back to my point on if A90 is in a different location in the Atlanta area, and not colocated at KATL. For example, OAK Tower is in Oakland. Oakland Center is in Fremont, 20 miles south of the airport. ZAU (Chicago Center) is in Aurora, not Chicago proper, nor near the C90 TRACON, neither of which are near KORD or KMDW.

If A90 isn't at KATL, then they wouldn't have been impacted. but the actual facility - the ATCT at ATL - more than likely have, and from what I've heard, the backup generators were out as well.

the tower in atlanta is apparently not on the same power feed // backup power system as the rest of the airport.

and let me add that having the same non-redundancy as the rest of the airport had would be quite reckless for an atc tower.
