Delta has corrected the situation. But the publicity was terrible.

I don't understand why this is news. The soldiers superiors gave them incorrect information about bags. Delta's policy is not new and it isn't Delta's fault that someone idiot told those poor guys they could check four bags free instead of three. What do you expect the ticket and gate agents to do, just change company policy on the fly?

Unfortunately the average person has no idea how a business works, so you'll get a lot of comments like "oh how awful" and such. You'll never get away from that because ignorance is sort of a fundamental condition.

And frankly, those guys making a video blaming delta for this and putting it on the internet was totally inappropriate and wrong.

Well you know what they say about the squeaky wheel.
And social media has just made it that much easier to be squeaky.

It's also important to note that the soldiers can get that cost reimbursed from the military as long as they are traveling under orders. A fact probably not explained to them very well in their orders or by their superiors.
Although it would have been much easier had the military simply negotiated that as part of the ticket price they paid so there would be no question on either end.
