MARATHON, Fla. (CBS12) — Two people are dead after a small plane crashed into the water near a Marathon Airport in the Florida Keys.
The U.S Coast Guard said it received a call from a good Samaritan of a debris field from a possible downed aircraft north of Marathon Airport. According to the Monroe County Sheriff's Office, the bodies were removed from the water Sunday morning around 9 a.m.
Deputies say a 1961 Cessna 210 Centurion airplane, which is believed to have been headed to Savannah, Georgia from the Florida Keys Marathon International Airport, crashed in Gulfside waters near Rachel Key. The identity of the two people is still under investigation and deputies believe they were the only two aboard the plane, but the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) dive team will investigate further. The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) out of Miami is also on the scene of the plane crash.  According to flight logs, the plane was scheduled to take off from Marathon at 6 a.m., the sheriff's office said. The FWC and FAA are investigating the time frame of the takeoff time and the time the bodies were reported.
