PEMBROKE PINES, Fla. (CBS12) — A small plane that crashed in Pembroke Pines last month, killing three people, appeared to be having engine trouble before takeoff, according to a preliminary report from the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB).
A witness at North Perry Airport, where the plane departed from, said he heard an engine run-up being performed near taxiway Bravo before the plane took off, according to the report. He said the engine was sputtering, “like rough idle.”
The witness also heard cycling of the propeller “a few times” and the engine backfired when power was increased during each sequence, the report states. He further reported that the engine rpm sounded “high, very high. From low to full RPM repeatedly which was more than a normal run-up. He was doing it fast.” However, the witness didn't see the plane take off.
According to recorded air traffic control communications, the plane was cleared for takeoff and the pilot was instructed to enter the left downwind leg of the traffic pattern, "which was acknowledged," according to the report. There were no distress calls from the plane during the flight.
Another witness, a certified pilot, saw the plane climb slowly after takeoff, then watched the plane stall in mid-air, spin and then go down with its nose aimed at the ground, the report states. He heard the plane experience a total loss of engine power, saying it “failed completely.”

Yaacov Nahom and Grant Hustad were the only people inside the plane and died in the crash.

It's unclear who was piloting the plane.

Nahom owned the plane -- a Beech B36TC -- according to the Sun Sentinel. Nahom might have been trying to sell the plane to Hustad, an airplane broker, since a listing for the plane advertised it for sale for $299,000.

The plane slammed into an SUV, driven by Megan Bishop, and her 4-year-old son, Taylor Bishop, was in the backseat. Megan Bishop was seriously injured in the crash, but her son died later that day.

He said he then heard a bang and an explosion.

Several videos from around the accident site captured crash. One video showed the plane caught fire about two seconds after right wing hit the ground.
