AzCentral.com reported the Piper PA-34 airplane was making its final approach into the small airport, but the pilot instead declared "Mayday." A crash landing on a street west of Interstate 17 followed.
The crash near 23rd Avenue and Deer Valley Road caused serious wing and front-end damage to the plane, as seen in Phoenix Fire Department photos. A brush with the plane also knocked down a couple of street signs and hit some parked cars, flipping one car on its side.
A Phoenix Fire Department Facebook post around noon Wednesday reported that the plane's pilot and the passenger "were treated," and that the pilot was taken in stable condition to a local hospital for evaluation. The fire department also reported that the National Transportation Safety Board will pursue an investigation of the crash.
