VERO BEACH, Fla. (CBS12) — A small plane crashed in Vero Beach.

The FAA said the plane landed on an abandoned golf course along Aviation Boulevard, on the south edge of Vero Beach Regional Airport.

The pilot, identified as 21-year-old Zhuang Qu, is shaken up but not hurt, according to authorities.

Vero Beach Police says Qu is a student with the flight safety academy and was on his first solo flight in a Piper Cherokee.

According to police, he did a "touch and go" from Vero Beach to LaBelle. On the way back to Vero Beach the pilot noticed the plane losing power while flying over neighborhoods and was able to maneuver the plane to an open field. The wing of the plane crashed into a tree and the plane crashed right before a canal along the roadway.
