DUNNELLON — Two men escaped injury Wednesday when the small plane they were flying in made an emergency landing in an open field south of State Road 40 West.

The men – one in his 20s, the other in his 40s – were aboard a 1966 Mooney. The men's names were not provided by officials. The older man is a flight instructor and was piloting the craft; the younger man is a student, according to Mike Grawe, manager of the Marion County Airport near Dunnellon.

Grawe said the men took off from the Ocala International Airport. While in flight, the plane developed mechanical issues. The pilot called the Ocala airport to report the problem. Officials there contacted their counterparts at the Marion County Airport, Grawe said.  Grawe and his staff sent up two planes to look for where the distressed craft had landed. They found it and directed first responders to that site: an open field in the 8500 block of Southwest 140th Avenue, south of SR 40 West.

Grawe said the plane made a gentle landing. There was minimal damage to the aircraft and no injuries.

Marion County Fire Rescue received the call at 11:31 a.m. and was on scene at 11:44 a.m.
