https://keysweekly.com/42/private-plane-goes-off-the-runway-at-key-west-airport-sunday-evening/No injuries were reported, but the incident did halt all takeoffs and landings for an hour or so while Arnold’s Towing removed the plane.
The runway at EYW is equipped with an EMAS (engineered material arresting system) that uses crushable material placed at the end of a runway to stop an aircraft that overruns it. The tires of the aircraft sink into the lightweight material and the aircraft is decelerated as it rolls through the material.
The EMAS did its job Sunday night, said Airports Director Richard Strickland, and no one was injured.
