WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. (CBS12) — The pilot of a small plane that a passenger eventually landed at Palm Beach International Airport is out of the hospital.

The 'miracle landing' happened last week when the pilot of a single-engine Cessna 208 had a medical issue during a flight from The Bahamas.

The FAA said the pilot became incapacitated and fell against the controls, sending the plane into a nosedive. The pilot went to St. Mary's Medical Center for treatment and then transferred to Palm Beach Gardens Medical Center where he underwent surgery for an aortic dissection. According to the Palm Beach Health Network, that's a life-threatening condition where a tear occurs in the inner layer of the body's main artery. It has a high mortality rate without treatment.

The pilot went home from the hospital on Monday.
