SAN DIEGO – The pilot who was flying a small plane died after crashing in Kearny Mesa Wednesday morning, police said.

A single-engine Cirrus SR22 crashed under unknown circumstances around 6:30 a.m. shortly after departing from Montgomery Field Airport, according to FAA spokesman Ian Gregor.

The red and white plane went down in a construction site near the Solar Turbine parking lot in the 4400 block of Ruffin Road near Balboa Avenue.

San Diego police said the pilot was the only person in the plane when it crashed.

A witness told authorities the plane appeared to be flying very low as it headed away from the airport.

FlightAware stated the plane frequently flew between Montgomery Field and Yuma, Arizona almost daily.

The FAA and NTSB will investigate the crash.
