near miss UA1454 at SFO ?
« on: April 08, 2014, 10:30:12 PM »
Hello
I was coming from SAN to SFO this afternoon on UA1454, and as we were approaching 28L, about 20-30ft from landing, it had to be aborted, and we saw another plane taking off from the perpendicular runway. Did anyone hear anything about it?

Didn't hear anything about it, but doesn't sound like a near miss. Sounds like a go around to maintain separation. Probably the aircraft taking off was a little slower than the controller anticipated and didn't quite make it though the runway intersection in time. Go arounds aren't too frequent, but they happen. I'm sure you could pull up the tower audio and listen to it if you know what time it occurred.

Thanks, good to know. I just pulled up the audio, couldn't understand what the controller was saying. It's around 21:00. Sounds like ATC requested the go around, can't tell why though.

The tower didn't give a reason for the go-around but I would have to agree with bbrasmussen.  There were two departures from 1R and 1L about 15 seconds apart.  I would guess that the heavy jet (UAL73) departing on 1L was the reason you went around...

The controller told you're flight to go-around, fly runway heading (280 degrees) and climb to 3000 feet.  A moment later he told UAL1454 to climb to 3100 feet and then turn left to 265 degrees.  After that he was told to switch to another frequency...

Thank you very much for clearing this up. I fly a lot, but in all these years hadn't experienced an aborted landing, and it was concerning to see this B767 so close to us. Good to know that it's not that uncommon an occurrence.

thanks again.
