cptbrw:
Report from Miami's local CBS  station on a near mid-air collision there this past summer.  Didn't hear or see anything about it at the time.  Includes link to animation and ATC recordings of the incident.  Cool headed job by the controller!

Great work by the controller! Level headed and cool.  8-)

Gotta love news reporters...he called runway 8 Left "Runway 8 ELL"...

The GAO Report linked in the article is pretty in-depth as well. Here is the link in case anyone missed it:

from a controller point of view this isnt the big hero event everyone wants it to be. my reason, watch and listen to the radar tape recording. when the controller noticed that the A340 pilot over flew the final onto the parallel final what was the first thing she did!

she spent 6 count them 6 seconds telling the pilot that he over flew the final when what she should have done was to seperate the aircraft FIRST, THEN and only THEN can you tell the pilot he F'ed up. they were lucky that day had it been a little diffrent those 6 seconds may have been very important.

sykocus:
She didn't say it 6 times. The news report played that sound byte 6 times because it was so "dramatic". And drama is what keeps viewers watching.

ogogog:
i would not call 900 to 1000" of vertical seperation a near mid air, far from it .dont get me wrong this could have been very ugly but it wasnt, just the press makeing it a big scary story.
