Anyone care to speculate on what was going on here? My ADB-S display caught what appears to be this military tanker orbiting JFK at FL240. Could it be just a simple training exercise? Would a training exercise have taken place at a location like this or is that more commonly done further out over water? As you can see, this aircraft has already done a number of these orbits and as of this post was still on station. Thoughts anyone?

He on any of the ZNY freqs?

At FL240 he most likely would have been on ZNY 125.325 but I was listening for a while on that feed and heard nothing. If they were on a military UHF frequency, they would not have been heard on that feed. Not 5 minutes after the initial post, the tanker disappeared. I had walked away from my PC and did not see which direction they went.

Hi Ron,
If you had any information of the aircraft, we maybe could check it out on Flightradar or Flightaware?
If this was re-fueling exercises, it's very rare! It's is usually done in special areas over water

If those two are in town, then that would make sense. Because today (12:05 EDT) the same aircraft with a different callsign is orbiting JFK again at FL240...but in just a slightly different pattern....by the time I noticed it, they had already done a number of orbits...as you can see...
I doubt it's a refueling exercise, not in that location...

The only thing I have is its callsign, which today is WINK20, and that it's a KC10 tanker. Flightaware and Flightradar don't show anything. I'm not surprised about that though.

Last night i did see what looked like a passenger jet being escorted by an F14 , coming from the South south shore over long Island heading north north west. The passenger jet took some pretty quick turns as the F-14 followed what looked like right off the wing of the passenger jet. I tried to catch with the smartphone but it was kinda cloudy as they were in and out of the clouds.

I suspect the tanker was there because some fighters are flying cap with all the VIPs in town.

Yea ID, that makes sense. Thanks.

WXMike: The US no longer flies F-14's, they have all been retired. Besides if an airliner was making pretty quick turns with a military escort, the news would be reporting an very different incident over Long Island. Plus if a military jet did intercept an aircraft where you stated, it would have been all over the news.
