Light aircraft crash - Chelsea, Melbourne Australia
« on: October 13, 2014, 11:52:05 PM »
A light aircraft (type as yet unknown) has crashed into houses just off of the beach in Chelsea, Victoria (< 2000m from my house).
Time of crash was approx 13:30 local time.

I've had a listen to but not found anything of note as yet.

Currently packing the car to head to the airport myself, so can't trawl through it all real time

Knowing the area, the craft was likely on approach to Moorrabin (YMMB) possibly on the return side of a training loop and would have been close to starting a long final if so.
They fly outbound over my place depending on the runway in use and return up the beach and a lot of training flights occur here.
1st I knew something was us was the sound of 3 or 4 helicopters overhead

Unfortunately, 1 confirmed dead at this time. Unknown if this was an aircraft occupant or on ground.

Update:
Turns out the aircraft was a kit built aircraft and the 70 year old pilot didn't survive the crash
Depending on the news report he lost engine power or stalled (how they know I don't know).
Not sure if 'kit built' translates to an ultralight or not.

If he was trying to ditch it he was only 50 metres short of a long beach strip unfortunately which may have had a better outcome
Thankfully he missed the large Safeway's and busy car park by about the same amount.
