State and federal agencies are investigating a fiery crash Thursday that killed the pilot of a medical evacuation helicopter near New Castle Airport.

The pilot, Michael R. Murphy, 37, of Franklinville, New Jersey, crashed into a drainage ditch while conducting training exercises, officials said.

Federal Aviation Administration spokesman Jim Peters said the pilot was the only person on board.

The crash occurred at 11:55 a.m. in a grassy area behind the U.S. Post Office near the 200 block of Quigley Blvd., about a mile south-southeast of the airport. It involved a Eurocopter E135, which was part of Penn Medicine's PennSTAR air transportation service.
