HONOLULU (AP) — A cargo plane made an emergency landing in the Pacific Ocean off the coast of Hawaii early Friday and both people on board have been rescued.

The pilots of the Transair Flight 810 had reported engine trouble and were attempting to return to Honolulu when they were forced to land the Boeing 737 cargo aircraft in the water, the Federal Aviation Administration said in a statement.

U.S. Coast Guard Lt. Commander Karin Evelyn said in an email that they received a report around 1:40 a.m. of a downed inter-island transport plane. About an hour later, rescuers in a Coast Guard helicopter spotted the debris field and two people in the water, Evelyn said.

One person was hoisted into the helicopter and taken to Queens Medical Center in good condition, Evelyn said. The Honolulu Fire Department rescued the other person who was also in good condition, she said.  The plane debris remains, Evelyn said, and the Coast Guard will evaluate the pollution at first light.

According to the state Department of Transportation, the crash happened about 2 miles (3 kilometers) off Kalaeloa Airport, Hawaii News Now reported.

The FAA and the National Transportation Safety Board will investigate.

Here is a link to the short flight:  T4810 (RDS810) Transair Flight Tracking and History 02-Jul-2021 (PHNL-OGG / PHOG) - FlightAware
It looks like they never made it above 2000' before starting their descent into the ocean.  Glad to hear the crew was rescued and are ok.  Kudos to the pilots for successfully ditching a 737 into the ocean - that is no easy feat!

Unfortunately, there is no feed from KHNL, so no audio available here.

Edit:  Wait, I just remembered it PHNL, not KHNL, which IS covered, so let me pull some audio and see what I can find!  Duh!

The audio is attached.  Looks like it all happened on Tower frequency.  There are lots of things going on - the departing flight that went down is "Rhoades Express 810", while a company "Rhoades Express 809" was inbound at the same time. That, along with the tower controller and pilots frequently stepping on each other, caused some confusion. You can begin to hear the tension in the voices by the second half of the audio...

Thanks Rick! I was just typing the same thing about it being on TWR freq and the confusion with '809' on freq.

Added the search and rescue audio.

Sounds like one critical and the other in serious condition.
