TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (WTHI) — A World War II-era aircraft crashed at Terre Haute Regional Airport just before 2 p.m. Thursday while attempting to land. The crash involved a group of three planes, with the first landing safely and the second diverting.  The third aircraft crashed with two people on board. One individual sustained minor injuries and was airlifted to a hospital in Indianapolis. They are expected to be released from care later today.

According to the plane's tail number, it was a 1944 Grumman TBM-3 from the Cincinnati Warbird Museum. The TBM-3 was known as the "Avenger" during World War II.   Jeff Fisher, Chief of Aircraft Rescue and Firefighting at Terre Haute Regional Airport, led the emergency response. Fisher and his team successfully extracted both individuals from the wreckage.

Airport personnel worked with the 181st Intelligence Wing and local law enforcement to secure the crash site. The scene will remain secured until the Federal Aviation Administration arrives and authorizes further action.

"We are grateful to all responding agencies for their swift, professional efforts," said Fisher.
