US Airways 1549 Audio
« on: January 16, 2009, 08:19:02 PM »
i've been (mostly) a reader up until this point.  but i really like this site.  (and would love a KDTW feed.)  :-D

so, glad i can share a clip people want to hear.

ok, here is the only US Air 1549 audio i have been able to find.  the quality is not great.

but you can clearly hear when they lose 1549 from radar (1:25 mark).

sorry about the .mov format.  it's all i got.  use quicktime and it'll play fine, though.

cheers!

The overlapping frequency could probably be removed if someone used the appropriate software

I believe this to be from LiveATC's EWR feed, if someone would like to check the archives they can verify this

Just play the clip in a media player that supports multiple channel outputs, that way you can isolate the left or right channel accordingly.  Audacity does this quite well in terms of editing.

hope nobody minds i took out the right channel with the relevant audio and made it go through both left/right.

Fryy, excellent job and thank you for taking this on.  One minor constructive criticism: the resulting file size.  LiveATC audio bitrates, both live streams and archive files, are mostly 16kbps with some of these dual channel feeds at 32kbps.

By saving the file at 192 kbps it does nothing for the audio quality (since mpeg compression removes data permanently) and only serves to artificially inflate the file size.  This means that LiveATC has to take a bandwidth hit every time someone downloads it and each downloader not on fast broadband has to wait longer than necessary.

Additionally, we are all seeing a new broadband paradigm where more and more providers will be capping monthly downloads and then charging for overage.   Something for all of us who send up files to be aware.

Attached here is the same file with the stereo track removed (in Audacity, go to Tracks > Stereo Track to Mono) and then saved as 32kbps.  Note the file size difference.

For the record, the archive is:

January 15, KEWR, 2030Z-2100Z.

I just muted the unwanted stero speaker and listened to the pertinent one. Nice and clear.
