United flight 1544 had taken off from Newark airport just before 6 a.m. and was heading towards Harry Reid International Airport in Las Vegas, information from Flight Aware shows.
About an hour into the flight, pilots made their return to Newark after a reported mechanical problem, a spokesperson for the Port Authority says.
A representative for United Airlines says the plane was carrying 176 passengers and six crew members.
