ATC "Not at liberty to say": Air Force One arriving at KORD
« on: February 13, 2009, 07:22:46 PM »
President Obama and Air Force One arrived at KORD this afternoon around 5:30 local.
The Air Force One and Marine One callsigns are not anywhere I can find on this tape, but there are lots and lots of anxious pilots asking about the delay-- I 've edited it down to include mostly these transmissions.  ORD tower lines them all up tight for 9R and tells them he can't say.
Thought this would be interesting despite the lack of AF1 or M1 callsigns on it.  Those must have come up on the other tower freq perhaps?  (KORD is split into north  and south tower).

They could have called up on a UHF freq. Most feeds can't pick up the UHF.

AF1 uses VHF in normal ATC communications.

I concur. I used to work at Willow Run Airport outside of Detroit and Air Force One would land at YIP insted of DTW. YIP was much less busy. We had a scanner in our office and plain as day on the radio, "Air Force One, cleared to land, 23L." The only time they use a differant callsign is when they go into hostle territory. And when the president is not on board. The airplane is not Air Forc One untill the president is on board.

"NOT-ALLOWED-TO-SAY"
Heh. I like the one who said "You might want to look to the GA ramp... can put two and two together"

The last line on that clip after the above quote someone says something, anyone got what it is?

From my understanding, I visited a Control Tower once and the controller told me that every control facility has a seperate channel for all of the military aircraft.  That is probably the reason why no one heard Air Force One on the frequency because they would be on a military channel in the 200MHZ range.

hmmm. That may be, I have no way of knowing.
However, AF1 and AF2 do come up on the standard frequencies a lot--listen to these clips of AF1 at KSFO originally found from this thread.

Yea they do. Like i said in my previous post, they came into YIP all the time on the common tower freq. I've heard "Air Force One" on Detroit Departure/Approach (118.95) as well.

I have talked with AF1 a couple of times enroute and he was on VHF.
