TAM8078 Gear problem at KJFK
« on: September 26, 2012, 08:55:03 PM »
TAM 8078 experienced a nose wheel steering fault on final to JFK 9/26/12 resulting in a go-around.  They ran the appropriate checklists and returned for a second landing attempt but were advised on short final that the nose wheel was still askew.  A second go-around was followed by some more checklists and communication with maintenance.  On the third landing attempt the nose wheel was still turned 90 degrees but, surprisingly, straightened just before touchdown.

Recording edited for time and relevant content.  It's lengthy but, thanks to the great coverage of JFK, all of the relevant communications are present.

Controllers and pilots did a great job...especially with the slight language barrier involved.  Sounded like the female pilot was feeling the stress at first, but the crew obviously kept a cool tool throughout the rest of the event.

In terms of elite controllers, if you're going to have an emergency, JFK is a good place to have it.

The language problem was real, though moderate. . It's also unneccesary if the certification agencies would require a higher degree of spoken English conprehension and comprehendability (if that's a word). It turned out ok, but it could have been less stressful (though probably not any more efficient).
