For those who fly or are interested in weather, this short clip might be of interest. This was taken from the Syracuse, NY, archive from Sunday, 12/23/07. A strong low pressure system had slowed down over the lower Great Lakes and a cold front was marching across western NY. In advance of the front the winds just above the surface were roaring at 50-100 knots.
A regional air carrier checks in and is told by ATC about a previous arrival's failed attempt to fly an ILS. In the case of this ILS the final approach course was about a 60-degree difference from the strong winds just above the surface. The controller also reads off the wind speeds at the lower altitudes documented by the previous arrival.

Its always a great joy when you get a controller who is incredibly helpful as this was. He gave the Colgan, a poor little SF-340 probably getting the snot beat out of them with those winds, lots of information, and was able to joke about it in the process. He's not afraid to admit when a mistake was made (sending GoJet onto rwy 10).
Couple months ago I was landing at JAX, except a thunderstorm cell was moving right across the airport. The controller basically gave us the choice of where to go, what runway to use, and what to do. We just put ourselves into a holding pattern over the OM for about 10 mins while the cell passed, and he told us to just shoot the approach when we were confortable. It's not like it was a slow time, this was about 3 in the afternoon. Its these types of controllers who really make the best out of a bad situation.

Same happened to me about a month ago at dvt. Stayed in the pattern for about 20 min waiting for the cell to pass when I started to loose oil pressure. Luckily the good folks at carefree skyranch don't mind helping out when a friend is in need.

Great clip, Buffalo had the same situation. I heard ATC telling an aircraft to slow down so he didn't overtake the plane on final and he replied by telling ATC the 80 knot tailwind wasn't helping.
