SWA3773 missed approach X2 at KPHL
« on: June 28, 2011, 08:47:27 PM »
SWA3773 was the first of 3 consecutive aircraft to miss approaches to rwy 9R at KPHL this morning.  Weather was clear and winds calm but they apparently were dealing with bright sunlight which made it difficult/impossible to see the runway at decision altitude (or at least that's what it sounds like).  The other 2 aircraft circled around and landed successfully but SWA missed on his second attempt also.  I don't know if it's his southern drawl or the overall tone and demeanor but it was entertaining to listen to the SWA pilot as he tried to get things sorted out.

Edited for time and non-relevant traffic.

Even on an ILS approach, you need to have visual contact with the runway at minimums, or decision height. If you do not, in this case because of glare, you must go around. It's procedure.

And it sounds like there was a fog layer or clouds on the approach end of 9R.  Pilot said he didn't get into it until 800 feet.

Would you rather have had him crash?

Spoke to someone who was in the area of the runways 9 approach at the time and he said there was a fog/haze layer in the area which explains things somewhat.

I'm aware of how an ILS approach and going missed works.  What I couldn't wrap my head around was why they were doing the ILS and going missed in clear weather.  The fog layer others have mentioned explains this now.

I've had to do it facing a sunset after a rain shower... Runway 27 with the sun setting right off the end of the runway.  The glare was so intense it almost blinded me, sunglasses, sun visor and all.  Went around and came back for another runway.  No big deal.  I wasn't the only one that day.
