Some confusion in aircraft type leads Roanoke tower to clear an Ercoupe to land on Taxiway Delta, thinking it was a helicopter. I love how the pilot handles it...
-
Wooowww!!
Thank God the pilot said he requested a runway to double check that...
Thanks Rick, I maybe need a bit of your help for this... you know! :-D :-D

I love the "I would prefer to land on a runway"
-
wow, thats pretty funny! Most of the controllers at Roanoke are pretty cool, I'll have to keep my ears open for that one next time I'm out!
-
ATC: "Direct to Delta taxiway"
56JB: "....OK"
Bahaha. Funny clip.

Yeah, the pilot, a local on the field, is probably wondering why he's getting taxi instructions while he's still inbound... Meanwhile, the controller, thinking he's a helicopter, is just trying to land him close to his hangar.

Can someone please tell me how to pronounce "Ercoupe"? It seems as though the controllers thought the pilot was saying "AirCare" which led them to believe it was a helicopter. I thought Ercoupe was pronounced "Air-coop."

AirCare is one of our primary medevac helicopter fleets in Central Virginia. Makes complete sense the controller thought he was a chopper, I didn't know they had any fixed wings.

And that's where the confusion began. The aircraft checks in with approach as "Air Coupe", but the controller hears (and reads back) "Air Care". For the entire exchange, the controller calls him "Air Care", and the pilot says "Air Coupe" and neither one hears or corrects the error. When the tower controller gets handed "an Air Care helicopter" from approach, his expectations are set. That's why he's so confused when the pilot says he based on the field - there are no Air Care helicopters based at Roanoke. This is the price we pay for still using 1930's analog VHF technology for 21st century ATC...

Or he just thought it was a Eurocopter...
