Saudia SV891 Mayday - diversion to Karachi
« on: December 01, 2016, 11:45:56 AM »
Saudia SV891 Lucknow-Jeddah (A330 HZ-AQI) diverted to Karachi Thursday 1st December, with a straight-in to Runway 25L. Active runway was 07R. Other inbounds forced to hold.

Captain declared Mayday and stated he would stop on the runway, unable to taxi. Requested full assembly of emergency vehicles, including ambulances.

Nature of problem still not clear at time of posting.

Edit: Reason for diversion was captain fainting. Co-pilot made the Mayday call.

Captain went into coma as soon as the aircraft entered Karachi FIR on waypoint 'TIGER'. Co-pilot after realizing the situation declared Emergency with May Day call 40 minutes before the estimated time over KC VOR. Since the co-pilot was slightly emotionally affected by the Captain's health he decided to divert to Karachi. The reason he did not taxi after landing is due to the Saudi Arabian Airlines policy (Co-pilot is prohibited to taxi).

The co-pilot is presently under investigation since he squawked 7700 even though it was not aircraft related emergency and only a medical emergency. Since the event the Saudi Arabian airlines have enacted new policy of strict health checks of cockpit crew especially the ones above 40 years age.
