Prankster on ATC Frequency
« on: August 06, 2010, 02:45:51 AM »
I was listening to my stream in the background while doing other chores as I usually do, and overheard what sounded at first like a nasty verbal confrontation on air. I stopped to listen some more and noticed it sounded unreal. But as I scrambled for my scanner to find out which of the frequencies it was on, it had already ended. So I downloaded the segment from the archive and isolated it. Turns out it was a soundboard being used of Arnold Schwarzenegger's movie career. The whole thing lasted about a minute, and it was almost like the person behind it was interacting with someone, ergo a pilot or a controller.

So here's what I do know about it: It was late night, traffic was pretty much dead and tower had long been closed. I had opened the San Marcos and Lockhart UNICOM channels for a little extra listening pleasure. The New Braunfels Delivery frequency becomes an active sector of San Antonio Approach at night. The prankster had to be using an aviation radio or transceiver.

So, was this prankster using a quiet small field UNICOM frequency, or was he interfering with commercial traffic on San Antonio Approach? The thing about that is I can pick up the Approach controller working that frequency, but I can't hear his pilots. I never heard him say anything, so I don't think it was that. Either way, this is an interesting little sound clip to listen to on dull nights. Anybody else ever have this problem? I feel so vigilant.

The prankster decided it would be funny to play during operational hours this afternoon, so I caught the frequency this time. He was on New Braunfels UNICOM while the Tower was operating their frequency. I reported this to the tower, which also resulted in me giving LiveATC.net a plug.  But they were not aware of it and thankful for me reporting it, so now the proper authorities will be listening.

How could they track it anyway?

I don't know, but it's not my job to worry about that. I just made them aware of it.

Easy! RDF (radio direction finding) and triangulation among other methods.  The FCC has done it in the past as well.  If the kid keeps it up, he'll be finding himself in a lot of trouble shortly.

Radio Direction Finding equipment... The FAA and the FCC will be more than happen to roll out a few of those unmarked vans and drive around a bit.....
