Near the end of the BOS TWR 1200-1230Z clip in the archive, there's discussion between the tower and an unidentified party and then between twr and Jet Blue 475 regarding what they saw.  Both report the gear was up, but Jet Blue saw the nosegear doors open.  Right after this someone chips in, "Not a good day."

Sorry, I haven't edited/uploaded clips before; check the archive.  The conversation above takes place in about 4/5 of the way into the clip.

The local Fox News site (myfoxboston.com) has pictures appearing to confirm the Jet Blue description.

20:44 into the archive clip the tower asks EagleFlight539 for intentions, they reply they have to go around and check something out.

Sounds like an excellent idea! Seems they were about to land gear up, as is indeed seen on a picture in this video

As to why they were about to land gear up, well, need to wait for investigations to come through.

From the article linked in the opening post:

Quote
Edward C. Freni, Massport's director of aviation, said at a press conference that as the plane first attempted to land at 8:29 a.m., a maintenance worker spotted sparks coming from the rear of the aircraft. The worker, Mark Faithful, relayed what he saw to the air traffic control tower, which ordered the plane to take off again. Passengers inside the plane reported hearing a loud "clunk."

Yeah, right.

Also, the first low approach and subsequent discussion take place about halfway through the 1230-1300Z clip (BOS TWR).

I am really wondering how a director of aviation can get himself to actually say such a thing at a press conference, he should know better, but I can also see how a journalist gets things mixed up really bad when dealing with something s/he doesn't really know about.

Just curious here, how could the crew have let it gone so far before going around?  I find it hard to believe that they had an indication that all 3 gear were down and locked.  Did they forget to put the gear down?  I'm not an ERJ pilot, but wouldn't the GPWS have caught that?  In my airplane, when selecting the landing gear, the first thing that happens is the nose doors open.  I'm trying not to speculate here, just wondering how this could have gone so far before a go-around was commenced.  It is obvious in the pictures that none of the gear are down and the nose doors are open.

The GPWS reads off the indicators, so if they have a 3 green indications the GPWS will not go off. They duplicate the  same thing in the Hangar after the incident, they had a 3 green before landing, Embraer or MTX have to answer this.... before it happens to somebody else.

A little fun thing:
Cockpit sounds during 3 different landings -
1. Gear up, Normal sounds
2. Gear up, no gear warning horn
3. Normal gear-down landing.
