Don't most Piper Cherokees (PA-28) have gear that's down and welded?  Sounds like it was a Piper Arrow.

Yep.  He says "Arrow" on the self announces.  That's N4675J a PA-28R-180.  The data block type code for this is P28R.

Wonder if he tried the emergency gear down procedure for the Piper Arrow. When I flew the Arrow you could release the hydraulic pressure and let the gear free fall into the locked position. Had to use that one time and it worked well.

Probably unaware the gear was up until the Big Scraping Sound or a fraction of a second earlier when the bird sank below where it should have touched.

Back when I flew Arrows a lot (early 80's) they had an auto-extend system that put the gear down based on airspeed and power combinations that were indicative of landing configurations.  Do Arrows no longer have that?
