Title: Pilot orders coffee during emergency landing @ KBUF today
Post by: dan9125 on July 13, 2006, 04:26:06 PM
The pilot of this E-145 remained calm during this emergency landing at Buffalo today. He had a gear fault light come on as he took off enroute to LaGuardia today around noon. He landed with no problem just as one of his fellow Chautauqua Airlines pilots bet he would. Check it out!

Not a problem at your end.  I'll bet you are using WinAmp to listen?  Dan forgot to covert the clip to 44,100 Hz before saving the clip in Audacity.  Right, Dan???  ;-)

Here is the same file that has been saved to work with WinAmp, too.

Dan, great clip.  Seems like the pilots were very relaxed, asking for a Tim Horton's coffee and all.  I wonder if he got his coffee?

Buffalo (spicy hot) chicken wings, as in:

http://www.anchorbar.com/origins.asp

and Tim Horton's coffee, which is a New England (US) and Canadian muffin and coffee shop chain, similar to Dunkin' Donuts (but not as many donuts):

I didn't know but a quick Google search turned up this (scroll to page seven of this PDF file for a brief biography of the man).  I was only 10 when he died:

Thanks for the teaser, ogogog.  An interesting history there.

Tim Horton was a famous hockey player for the Maple Leafs in the 60's and 70's. He started a doughnut shop which to this day has expanded across Canada and into the USA...

Basically, it's a Canadian cultural icon. We're pretty fixated on it. :wink

Peter,
Sorry about the audacity conversion screw up....its been sort of quite in the skys around Buffalo so I havn't uploaded any clips since the "ice on the wings"season ended. I was wondering if people would ask what Tim Horton's was. Actually Tim Horton played a few seasons with the Buffalo Sabres as well.

That's a great clip... I love how the pilot asked for "pretty little red lights waiting for us on the ground."  Indeed, they are pretty lights, aren't they?  :)

It was the other pilot in Chautauqua 3225.  I thought it was funny how he said that too.

Great Clip  -   I have had several flight emergencies over the years but I'm sure I never sounded as cool as this guy.  He obviously has a few flight hours in his log book!

When we had that really windy day a few Fridays ago, one guy asked for a shot of whiskey (on the CD freq.) because countless airliners were going around...they sure sounded stressed!

Greg, what Friday was that?  The archives here have a much longer retention rate and assuming that the Dan the BUF feeder didn't lose power, there should be some good stuff in the BUF archive from that day.

Funny you should mention it...."Dan the Buff Feeder" actually prepared a clip from this very windy Friday but never posted it. I guess now is as good a time as any. If I remember correctly it was Friday December 1st between 3 or 4 pm untill about 11pm. Gust were over 50kts and a few aircraft needed 2 or 3 tries before landing. The pilot  of this Northwest flight 1128 is happy he is landing in Buffalo this night. Ouchy!

Peter,
You must not have been in Buffalo that night or your Bonanza would have set a world speed record on your flight back to the East!

You must not have been in Buffalo that night or your Bonanza would have set a world speed record on your flight back to the East!

Thankfully, no.   Given that those winds and wind shear were forecasted days ahead of time, I would have made arrangements to leave prior to the worst of it hitting.

As you know, forecasts can sometimes turn out worse than expected, which is why being proficient in flying a small aircraft with gusty winds is important.  One time last spring I landed in Buffalo with winds gusting to about 42 kts, but that was not by design.  Forecast and METAR for BUF prior to my departure were a more docile 20 kts gusting to 25 kts, but winds had picked up considerably in the hour and a half it took me to preflight and fly over to BUF.

So far, the fastest groundspeed I have experienced in the Bonanza was about 230 kts, or about 265 mph and that was due to a 50 kt tailwind.   I suspect the winds aloft on that Friday, December 1st were much stronger than that.

Thanks, Dan, for the clip.  I am going to see if Dec. 1st is still in the archives here.  There might be more gems from that day awaiting discovery.

I was in the tower that evening! top gust was 65kts.

From the radar: a B712 (Citrus) doing 90kts over the ground on final!

Dan,

I'm 16 years old. I'm an intern there. Yes i was there that night. Let me tell you, in addition to the winds, the transformers treated us to a spectacular fireworks show (mostly in Niagara County and to the north).

Give them a call at the TRACON (the tower is attached) and see if you can arrange one. You may need to talk to a supervisor, though, to arrange one.

If you arrange it for a Friday evening, you may run into me!
