The Florida Highway Patrol reported that a small-engine Piper Aircraft veered off the runway while landing at St. Augustine Airport Sunday afternoon.

According to FHP, the incident took place at approximately 12:00 p.m., when the aircraft was attempting to land on the paved airstrip at the St. Augustine Airport when it suddenly veered off into the grass area.

The aircraft’s propeller then reportedly struck a ditch, causing the aircraft to come to rest off of the runway.

The pilot, an 82-year-old man, and his 76-year-old passenger both sustained minor injuries in the crash. Emergency medical services arrived promptly on the scene and transported the pair to Flagler Hospital for treatment. The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) have been notified of the incident and will conduct a thorough investigation to determine the cause of the crash. It is not yet known what may have caused the aircraft to veer off the runway.
