Title: NWA1605 Gear Door Problems
Post by: Craig on March 06, 2009, 04:41:12 PM
Here are two clips from last week when a NWA jet had gear door troubles on approach.

The first clip is the in the air communications.

The second clip is from the ground and unfortunately, very staticky, but contains conversations between the crew, one of the emergency vehicles and mechanic as they troubleshoot the gear doors which were hanging to the runway.

Both were edited for time.

This sounds like a DC-9 series to me. It's the only aircraft I can think of that would serve KGRR, with main gear doors that hang low enough to touch the ground when open. Also 80 souls on board, and using Northwest as callsign. Anyone know for sure?

Below is a pic of a DC-9-15 sitting on the ground with its main gear doors open. See how low they are to the ground? almost touching!

Yes, according to FlightAware, NWA1605 is a DC-9-50

I saw a NWA DC-9 land in CVG with its gear doors open when I still worked in the tower.  They dragged on the runway....for just a second before ripping off and tumbling down the runway.

The pilot had to of set that bird down light as a feather! Otherwise, exactly what you just said would have happened! I wish there was a video of the landing...just for grins, you know...
