no-gyro vector
« on: May 07, 2009, 04:56:03 PM »
Heard a rather interesting approach into Buffalo today by an Army chopper. Since I have never heard no gyro vectors before I thought i would post it on the forum. Pilot landed safe @ KBUF just before noon today.

Wow, I've never actually heard a no-gyro approach used in anger.

When I was doing my primary flight training, I flew a no-gyro ASR approach into LEX, very interesting.

Flygirltammy:

Since you are working on your IFR ticket, be sure that you request a no-gyro approach sometime.  It's good to experience the procedure and the controllers need the practice too.

Excellent idea! Very good! See, this is what I meant in my other post there maybe being little things that I have not even thought about (and maybe not even my instructor).

Easy to get myopic if the only thing I am thinking about are the obvious things I will get tested on.

It can be hard finding a facility with a controller that is current on the ASR approach, as well as willing to give one.

It's easier to get a practice no-gyro approach at smaller Class C airports.  I used to request them all the time at KSPI and they were happy to accommodate every time.  I would never request one here in the Chicago area.
